The Shetland can be an active, responsive rocker or a simple bench that provides a casual, playful and interactive seating option for impromptu collaboration.

Created by the Haworth Design Studio for the Haworth Collection, Shetland is light, informal, and easily reconfigurable low seating. Shetland encourages multiple comfortable postures, encouraging the body to actively adjust

Distinctive

The Shetland is created in wood plyform with walnut veneer or white painted plyform and accented with wool and leather saddle accessories, bringing a natural aesthetic to work areas. It allows designers and architects to create iconic spaces when casual seating is needed for collaboration, interaction and minimalistic guest seating.

What's Next?

The first concepts of Shetland were conceived during a project of the Haworth Design Studio called "Next Seating". The year was 1996 and Steve Nemeth was leading the design team on an exploration of seating that would support various postures spanning multiple sitting and standing ranges. Concepts were created that provided motion and support, with the idea that "Your best position is your Next one".

It was during this conceptualization that the design team realized that there was deficiency in informal, light scale seating when creating group work and less configured spaces that were both beautiful AND functional. In the past few years the Haworth Design Studio has taken these original concepts and synthesized them with their modern work research and the contemporary design philosophy of "Active Seating", especially in collaborative areas where seating must be quick to reconfigure.

"The focus was on simple forms and simple use with surprising function and thought"

The rocking of Shetland is designed to be a gentle motion from any seated position. Motionless stability is as effortless as the smooth side-to-side rocking. The curvature of the top is designed to hold documents or devices without compromising it's smooth lines. Rocking has been associated with lowering blood pressure, improving focus, and the release of anxiety-killing endorphins. The idea behind these features is to keep the user active and engaged in collaboration, especially in settings where physical interaction is prevalent- like working on white boards or display screens.

Care & Maintenance

Wood

The individual characteristics and natural variations of wood make every piece of Haworth wood furniture one of a kind. We’ve treated your furniture with the finest finishes to preserve its unique beauty. Now it’s your turn – treat your furniture with a little tender loving care, and it will be good to you for many years to come. Follow these guidelines:

DO:
• Clean all surfaces frequently with a soft, water-dampened cloth, wiping with the grain.
• Use coasters under hot objects such as coffeepots and cups (avoid temperature extremes).
• Lift objects to move them.
• Immediately remove all liquids on wood surfaces by blotting them dry (moisture is not your furniture’s friend!).
• Use a protective desk pad under all writing areas and business machines.
• Level the product to prevent items from sliding across surface (and allow better movement of drawer slides).

DO NOT:
• Use paper towels as this will scratch the surface.
• Clean or wipe against the grain.
• Expose the furniture to extreme heat, cold or humidity variations (keep away from radiators, air conditioning vents, humidifiers, fireplaces, etc.)
• Pull items across the wood as this will scratch the surface.
• Expose the furniture to strong sunlight (this will accelerate changes in the color of the wood furniture).
• Use harsh solvents – they might cause the finish to deteriorate.
• Use glass cleaners or waxes.
• Allow water to stand on the wood surface.

Regular Maintenance
Dust your wood furniture regularly to avoid build-up of dirt and grime that can dull the finish. Dust with a damp cloth following the grain of the wood. Do not use excess amounts of water and do not allow water to stand on the wood surface.

Other Surface Materials

Other materials that might be utilized in your wood furniture are also easy to care for and maintain.

Leather
Most stains can be removed with lukewarm water and a mild soap. Then wipe the leather with a damp cloth and dry with a soft, dry cloth. Saddle soaps, polish, or wax should never be used. For general maintenance, dust the leather surface just as you would furniture.
