The Ocean Collection is a reimagined interpretation of ocean waste plastic, combining innovative solutions to prevent pollution of the world’s oceans. The pieces are characterized by a light structure with repeated slats and metal frames, and they’re made and tested for outdoor use. They can be easily disassembled to be recycled again.

Meet Mater
Innovative Danish brand Mater reuses everything from coffee shells to plastic waste to create their sustainable designs. Based in Copenhagen since 2006, they’ve long championed an approach to manufacturing that prioritizes minimal environmental impact. Their name means “mother” in Latin, signaling a promise to honor Mother Earth through high-quality pieces with timeless simplicity.
The Ocean Collection
Originally produced in wood veneer, this outdoor furniture collection was first designed in 1955 by Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel — one of the 20th century’s most renowned design duos. Since 2019, Mater has been reimagining these robust designs with a sustainable mindset while simultaneously paying homage to the classic Danish design heritage.
Designer Spotlight
Renowned designers Jørgen and Nanna Ditzel met at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where they both were students. They quickly established their own design studio in 1946, and they became known for challenging familiar materials and craft methods with an experimental approach. Now their work is beloved for its playful disposition, innovative thinking, and highly sustainable techniques.
