While the definition of ergonomics may sound pretty straightforward, in practice it’s pretty complex.
To take things a bit deeper, ergonomics is a science that combines cognitive psychology, anatomy, biomechanics, engineering, physiology, and design principles. It also requires awareness of preferences, tendencies, and real-world applications.
Of course, different companies approach ergonomic design in various ways. However, there are basic key principles to follow to keep the body in a safe and supportive position for long periods. Understanding what is ergonomic involves:
WORK IN A NEUTRAL POSITION
This means your neck is relaxed and your body is not slouching or hunching but is vertical with your upper back and lower lumbar curve supported. Sounds simple, but it can be a habit that’s hard to make. But trust us, once you get into the habit of sitting in a neutral position, your body will reap the rewards.
The idea is to make sure things you use regularly (chargers, pens, sticky notes) are within reach so you’re not bending and leaning to get them over and over again. So if you currently reach for documents on the ground on repeat, it may be time to invest in some desk storage.
REDUCE STATIC MUSCLE FATIGUE
If your body is in the same position all day long, you’re undoubtedly putting extra pressure on certain parts of your body. Taking breaks, switching between standing and sitting at a standing desk, and investing in anti-fatigue mats are simple ways to avoid doing this.
MOVE, EXERCISE, AND STRETCH
Exactly what it sounds like! If you make your workspace conducive to movement, then you’ll be doing your health (mentally and physically) a whole lot of favors. This may look like having an outdoor space to get fresh air and walk around, or making an intentional effort to do desk exercises that’ll boost your mood and productivity.
PROVIDE CLEARANCE AND MINIMIZE CONTACT STRESS
In other words, ensure you fit in your space comfortably so you’re not forced to change your body or maintain uncomfortable postures.
All this to say: It takes research and work to make something feel effortlessly good. A small tweak here and there, seemingly minuscule design details, and subtle shifts can be absolute game-changers. It’s why our team often spends years perfecting our products to feel just right.
Some things are too good to keep to yourself.
