Excalibur Toilet Brush
Designed by Philippe Starck for Heller, the Excalibur toilet brush brings high design to one of the most humble household objects. Made with post-consumer recycled plastic and intentionally offered in bold colors, it transforms a daily essential into a striking piece of functional design.
Details
When Philippe Starck partnered with Heller to create Excalibur, he set out to elevate one of the most overlooked objects in the home. “To design a toilet brush would be the most humble service I could give,” Starck said of the project—an idea that captured headlines when the design debuted in The New York Times Home section in 1995.
The result is both playful and elegant. A sword-like handle protects the user’s hand, while a tapered wand capped with a nylon brush slips neatly into its sculptural holder. When removed, the form opens up—unexpected, functional, and unmistakably Starck.
Made from post-consumer recycled plastic and offered in a range of bold hues, Excalibur was intentionally never produced in plain white. Starck believed the object should be visible—present, yet discreet. In 2000, the design was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
