First built for use on submarines in 1944, the Navy Chair has been made the same way ever since. Using a 77-step process, the makers take soft, recycled aluminum, then form and weld it by hand before tempering for strength. Finally, the chair is anodized for a durable finish. The Pennsylvania Workshop

Emeco makes its classic aluminum chairs in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Where they’ve always been made, since 1944. The factory is still on Elm Avenue, and each chair is still built by hand. That process takes 77 steps, from forming, welding, and grinding to heat-treating, finishing, and anodizing. When it’s done, you’ve got a chair that’s so strong, it’s guaranteed for life.
