Anna Dawson

Anna Dawson translates her passion for surfing and architectural upbringing into functional pieces that capture the fluid harmony between humans and their environment. A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design with roots in Sausalito, California, she gained recognition when her Swell Wall Catchall was discovered at NYCxDesign in 2022 and subsequently produced by Heller Furniture. Her design approach balances thoughtful functionality with organic forms inspired by water's movement, resulting in pieces that feel both innovative and intuitively familiar. Anna's work embodies her philosophy that great design should create the same sensation of effortless connection that comes from successfully riding a wave.

Designer Story

The ocean has always been Anna Dawson's greatest teacher. Growing up in Sausalito, California, with the constant presence of water and the architectural influence of her parents, Anna developed a unique perspective that would later define her design philosophy. What began as childhood explorations along the coastline eventually evolved into a profound connection with surfing—a relationship that wasn't immediately harmonious.

"I was terrible at surfing when I first started," Anna often recalls with a laugh. "But there was something about that struggle, about learning to read the water and find balance, that captivated me completely."

This perseverance through difficulty became a cornerstone of her approach to design. After studying at Whitman College and later honing her craft at Rhode Island School of Design, Anna began developing work that captured the elusive sensation of riding a wave—the moment when chaos transforms into perfect synchronicity.

Her breakthrough came in 2022 when her prototype for the Swell Wall Catchall caught the attention of Heller Furniture at WantedDesign during NYCxDesign. The organically shaped wall-mounted storage solution, with its wave-like curves and practical functionality, exemplified her belief that "great design should feel as natural as breathing, even when it's solving a complicated problem."

"I'm interested in creating objects that have a purpose but also tell a story," she explains. "The Swell Catchall was inspired by my days organizing surf gear—finding elegant solutions for the beautiful mess of everyday life."

Based in Brooklyn but forever connected to the coastal environments that shaped her, Anna continues to push boundaries in her creative practice. Her studio process mirrors the patience required in surfing—methodical observation followed by intuitive action. Each design begins with extensive sketching and material exploration, always returning to the question: "Does this capture that feeling of effortless flow?"

"Design is about creating something that feels inevitable," Anna notes. "Like it's always existed, waiting to be discovered—similar to finding that perfect wave that seems to have been shaped just for you."

Her collaboration with Heller marked a significant milestone, bringing her ocean-inspired aesthetic to a broader audience while maintaining the personal narrative that makes her work distinctive. The Swell Wall Catchall, with its clever integration of hooks and cups, reflects her California surfer roots while solving the universal challenge of organizing daily essentials.

"The best designs are the ones you don't think about—they just work," she says. "But behind that effortlessness is usually years of refinement and understanding."

Anna Dawson's trajectory as a designer illustrates the power of personal experience in creating meaningful objects. By translating her journey from struggling novice to confident surfer into tangible designs, she invites users to experience that same sensation of harmony and discovery in their everyday environments.
